Measuring jug

I am looking for a nice clear measuring jug for liquids, one or two cups in
volume.

ATM I have an el-cheapo plastic one that is perfectly fine but not suitable
for hot liquids, so I was looking for toughened glass.

What I would also like is something beautiful. Not fancy-schmancy; simple and
elegant. How hard can it be? So I looked at Pyrex.

Here is a picture of a Pyrex jug.
http://thecookskitchen.com/browse_8075&big=1

To me this jug looks like it needs some Viagra. That *unfortunate* handle is
both ugly and totally impractical -- the industrial designer at Pyrex must not
have pinky fingers, because the handle doesn't have room for my pinky and
therefore feels unstable. But there is plenty of room at the top of the jug,
which is good. Still, Pele Pyrex isn't nice enough to invite to my home.

Any suggestions for other brands?

I wouldn't use anything *but* Pyrex for a measuring jug.

An interesting quote on that site: "Our glass measuring jugs have
been constructed from durable Pyrex glass, which prevents lingering
odours, flavor absorption, or staining and will in turn ensure
ingredient purity."

The qualities mentioned are true of glass generally, and have
nothing to do with it being Pyrex.

Then they don't mention the great attribute of Pyrex, its heat-proof
nature.

go find a larger version. Every kitchen I've been in, in the world, has some
variety of pyrex or fire king jug like this! But they come in different
sizes. My ones have proper finished handles, and I have a big one and a
little one. Go hunt out the bigger sizes, and you might find one with the
proper handles too.

I've seen some of the larger Fire King jugs with full handles - by that
I mean new ones still available in stores.
I just did a quick Google but next to nothing came up for new Fire King
products, just old collectables, for some reason.

Bodum do one which is heat-proof glass and measures up to a litre. Quite
attractive in my opinion, but I don't know how good the handle would be.
I've only seen it recently online at kitchenwarehouse:

for a picture.

Cheers,

That's nice! I like the clear markings on it too. Will try it for heft when
I see it. Thanks!

Ugly is an opinion but as for being impractical, it isn't and I can say so
based on experience as I have both a small and a large Pyrex jug with
exactly the same handle. I have big hands for a woman and have never had
problems with these handles. They work well and have the added benefit of
extending the use of the big jug. I use it for mixing I find the handle
design especially useful as I can put my hand round the bowl part of the jug
with my thumb over the top of the handle/lip area and it's very stable for
pouring out of and my hand isn't caught at the bottom of the handle as it
would if it was a standard "D" shaped handle.

I found when I picked it up that I was holding it with 3 fingers and a thumb,
and it felt really unbalanced -- tippy, as if I were not in full control of
it. I'm a shorty so my hands are probably smaller than average -- perhaps
that's the difference.

I have an English one of these (and there is an important difference between
this and most of the ones that are sold here!) and I don't have problems
with the handle but YMMV.

It is great - the heat proof factor is a real bonus.

But one thing to be wary of!

If you are buying one with metric and imperial measurements - which for me
is a must as my recipe collection is, er, bilingual :-) then you need to
note that the American made pyrex jugs (which are what you normally find
here) measure a 16oz pint rather than a 20oz pint. Older Australian
cookbooks and British cookbooks are always referring to 20oz pints when they
use it as a measurement. So even thought I "know" this is the case, I made
sure I got someone to bring me a pyrex jug back from the UK so I didn't make
mistakes mid recipe.

Having said that, the UK has now gone far more metric than it was when I
lived there and it is possible that Uk pyrex only has metric measures on it.

Happy hunting

smaller. They are invaluable I highly reccomend.
