Shifty Coles Downsizing

OK, so food snobs will probably turn up their noses, but since I was a
kid I've loved Coles pizzas. My mother used to bring home a couple on
the 2-for-$10 deal as a weeknight treat.

I still grabbed a couple every now and then when I couldn't be arsed
cooking anything, although the bases are somewhat "biscuitty" and the
pizzas themselves were pretty bland.

Then, about 2 weeks ago, I bought a couple and they seemed a bit
"odd". Then I realised......they've SHRUNK.

They are still the same price, but only 2/3 of the size they used to
be!!!

Has anybody else noticed this???

On the other hand, the quality has improved markedly. The bases are
somewhat more flavoursome than previously and nowhere near as hard.
And the toppings are a litte more tasty than before (though they
wouldn't impress a gourmand).

I know I know, I can buy/MAKE heaps better, but after a long day at
work when I couldn't be stuffed cooking and I want something "naighty"
it's handy to grab a couple on the way home.

Not the only thing that has shrunk! A couple of weeks ago Coles had a
"price rewind" on potato chips. Looked fair enough until you realised
it wasn't only the price that had been "rewound" -- the *quantity* in
the packets was down about 13% too! (From the old 230 g to new 200 g.)

The quantity rewind is a fixture; the price has reverted.

Talk about scam merchants... No wonder Woolies is killing them!

Coles are actually struggling to make a profit, though I find it hard to
feel sorry. Hard to know if it's a result of that sort of thing, despite
it, or they are desperate measures.

I think its a sign of the times. I work for a Bunnings Ditribution
center and we have been -uncomfortably - slow since January. The
figures from other DC's around Australia are the same. The stores are
not selling - so they are not ordering from us.

We allocate some stock to stores at various times of the year. Stuff
that until now has not been a problem for the stores to shift. We are
now getting stores asking us to hold off on allocation stock as its
not selling.

Mates who work for other places - big and small- all say the same
thing - except the car dealers who still seem to push the new cars out
no problems?

Maybe that's reflecting the rich/poor/nothing in between trend, but
Bunnings' loss is unlikely to be someone else's (hardware) gain.
But people have to buy food - either they are buying it somewhere else,
Coles weren't making enough on sales (most likely) or they got in too
deep with other investments.

It's certainly happening in Queanbeyan. The woolies there did a big reno and
now everyone goes there. Sadly, they didn't renovate their queuing
mechanisms (and even got rid of the bank line for the nest of express
checkouts) so now the queues are massive. So I've returned to Coles, which
has always been quite poorly-run, with big queues and empty shelves. The
queues aren't quite so long now!

I do think Coles home-brand stuff is better than Woolies though.

Lost sales is only one reason businesses fail, for instance big
supermarket suppliers fail by being screwed.

Down there too? I've often wondered about management of Coles. I
wasn't sure if it was just a local abberation or whether it was a
corporate failing. Sounds like the latter -- which would also explain
why Woolies has been killing Coles for years now.

I think that was true of their earlier lines, but the "You'll Love
Coles" stuff I've tried is pathetic. Even the toilet paper is crap.
(Appropriately enough I guess.)

Never get teh Black packaged Coles pasta! It's atrocious. It's sold as some
premium Coles stuff, and it's seriously the worst pasta ever made anywhere,
it's even worse than American pasta. I cooked some ribbons, and you
couldn't wind them on the fork without them breaking. Simply dreadful. The
el cheapo Coles stuff in teh white packets is OK though.

I do wonder about the tolerance of long lines from management. I certainly
don't tolerate it. If there's lines, I go elsewhere. If I enter the shop and
there's no lines, but there's lines when I am ready to check out, I often
ditch my shopping and go to the deli. It's a matter of principle.

One main reason why I don't shp at Bunnings. Lines seem to be a shop policy.
So they don't get my money, it only encourages them.

Second the pasta comment. Daughter lives on pasta and won't abide the Coles
stuff. Only had one serve and wouldn't touch it again.

Hi there,

If these were the pizzas from the deli. I would like to let you know that
recently the company Fresca was taken over they new company has shurnk the
size but has not shrunk the wholesale price that coles pays for them. in
the last 2 years the profit margin on the pizzas have been 6.8% this is
hardly enough to pay the staff wages that spend time putting them out and
marking them down.

No Worries,

I also do agree that the pizzas do taste better and also do not burn
before the topping has melted. Just to let you know. most prices are set
with a certain profit margin i cannot disclose this markup as it is
against company policy. but alot of the reason why grocery prices go up is
because te supplier E.G. Arnotts, Smiths, Nestle charges supermarkets more
so the supplier can make more profit. At coles we also do weekly comp
checks and most of our prices are the same or cheaper then Woolies, Other
Coles Stores, Bilo and Aldi
