Bush Spices

Lately I've been wanting to try out a few recipes using Australia bush
foods, particularly spices. (Hey, I know I've been hooked very late into
this fad but it's always fun to experiment with food!)

I've had a look online and I can order quite a lot there but I really prefer
to go and look at the dried or canned produce and chat to a shopkeeper about
my choices as I can see me making some rather expensive mistakes, otherwise.
I live in south eastern Melbourne and I'm wondering if anyone can recommend
a specialty shop or section within one which would be a good place for me to
browse for inspiration.

Also, if anyone has recipes on the theme of bush food they've tried and
enjoyed I'd be delighted if you took the time to share them. So far I've
tried a purchased wattleseed pasta and mucking about with our own lilly
pilly berries to make a sauce to go over grilled chicken. Quite nice but
fairly fiddly!

My apologies if the topic has been covered before in here - I have been too
lazy to google for it.

Was going to say Kandy (hampton park ) would be suited, but after re reading
your post I doubt it.

I would suggest Robins foods pty ltd (located in braeside )
http://www.robins.net.au/

Another place would be Wild About You Bush Foods (133 Gardenvale Rd
Gardenvale VIC 3185
ph: (03) 9530 6844 )

Other thoughts would be health food shop.

Does this help you ???

Ah, dont' worry about having nothing to contribute - the nature of Usenet is
such that one can simply jump right into the middle of a thread for no
reason whatsoever like I am doing so now :)

Actually, bush spices have always intrigued me and I should really do a bit
of reading on them as I have access, albeit not as regular as I like, to a
small kitchen now :)

Could be fun finding the fresh stuff out in the bushlands of outer Sydney. I
guess one would have wash such finds well due to possible contamination
from human activity - although this would probably be true for ANY fresh
herb or spice grown around Sydney.

*sigh* so much food still to eat and so little time ....

Just be sure you can identify the damn things correctly!

You think that's a problem? What about plonk!
(Never drink the same stuff twice -- there's not enough time in a year
to keep up, even at a bottle a day. :-)

Cheers, Phred.
