"Standalone" supermarkets - is yours being renovated?

In my local area we have a couple of supermarkets (a Coles and a
Woolworths) that are not part of a larger shopping complex.

They are both undergoing renovations - the Woolworths appears to be
gettiing "prettied up" (I haven't been inside), and the Coles is
undergoing MAJOR expansion.

I'm curious to know if anyone else who has a "standalone" supermarket
in their area noticed anything similar.

Or do you think my ones could just be sh|tting themselves over the
local (also standalone) Aldi that has been going great guns now for
about 2 years?

i wish our local coles would get an upgrade. Rumour has it that coles see
the land as so valuable that they would rather sell it for apartments, so
they are letting it run down..... they are doign a good job of turning
customers away by large checkout queues, squashy aisles, crap range....

I think my local Coles sees what good business the fish shop, butcher,
deli, growers' market and Michels Patisserie across the road does and
thinks a big reno will bring in the customers. They're bunging in a
Bakers Delight, whihc I'm sure will delight the Vietnamese bread shops
in the area....not.

Thing is, which Coles don't seen to realise, I live in an area with a
high proportion of people of Mediterranean origin, who often grow
their own F&V, see cooking/entertaining as a big part of their life,
and as such who know what is shit and what is good quality produce.

That is why last Saturday morning the butcher, fish shop, growers'
market and deli were PACKED, and you could have walked into an empty
checkout in Coles.

Coles is run by a bloke who proudly declared he'd never been in a
supermarket -- and it sure shows!

Some time ago people were saying Coles' in-house brands were better
than Woolworths' generic lines. But I've yet to meet anyone who
thinks the recent "You’ll Love Coles" products are worth even the
highly discounted prices paid for them. Even the toilet paper is
utter crap -- appropriately enough I suppose.

The real concern is that these lines may soon be the only ones
available as the quality brands are forced out of the market place.

I like the Coles brands. Their tinned tomatoes are brilliant. But avoid the
horrible pasta that has appeared in the "gourmet" black boxes, egg fettucine
etc. worst pasta EVER. It breaks. You cook it, and try to wind it on your
fork, and it breaks into bits!!!!! Awful stuff. It doesn't taste good
either.

The lines Coles do best though are checkout lines. They specialise in those.
Except Manuka Coles, which is quite good.

I live in Devonport, Tassie. Semi-rural area. We have one Coles and one
Safeway/Woolworths. Yes you guessed it, they both did their major
renovations /extensions at the same time. I am convinced they did it on
purpose. They realised that it was such a pain for customers that the
customers would go to the other supermarket. By doing it in sync they
didn't lose any customers, not even temporarily :(

But mine aren't even that close - though it is only a 5 min drive
between the two.

I was just wondering is there was some ev0l conspiracy or something,
but then I reckon it's more about the local (standalone) Aldi and meat
and produce shops pinching customers.

Yep. The Queanbeyan Woolies has been having major renos for the past month
or so. Being made much bigger.

The local Coles is inside a plaza, is not having anything done to it, and is
a very bad supermarket.

We have a standalone Aldi, too.

One woolies I know of has just finished a major reno (this one is in a
mid-size shopping center) and another is in the middle phase. (in a small
shopping center with the woolies and little else) Although in this case
both were originally Action stores purchased from FAL as part of the
FAL/IGA deal (that saw other action stores re-branded as IGA).

I poked past the Qbn woolies tonight, and the reno is DONE. Even the outside
with all the new lights and stuff. Very open and airy looking.

I hope they totally flog the crap out of Coles. They deserve it.

My local Coles needs to be renovated (Central Market, Adelaide City). It
looks terrible.

According to Wikipaedia, Coles joined the Central Market in June 1967, and
I suspect it's only had a coat of paint since.

I always get lost in the Woolworths in Rundle Mall. It has a weird layout
with diagonally-running aisles.

Maybe now that Westfarmers owns Coles, they might renovate some of the ugly
stores.

Also, for some reason many of the Coles stores I frequent seem more
"cramped" than many of the Woolworths & IGA stores I visit (especially
Woolworths & IGA stores that used to be Action)
