As I was putting the chicken pieces into the oven tonight I remembered some
bought chicken with spices I used to buy from Safeway about 10+ years ago.
You could buy chicken thighs on the bone and they came with this lovely
coating. I would cook them in the oven for about 45 minutes then a dollop of
natural yogurt and squeeze of lemon juice to serve. They were very tasty.
All I can think they definitely had was paprika.
Any ideas?

http://chickenrecipes.cookingcache.com/recipes/kfcchickensecretspices.shtml

"1 tablespoon rosemary
1 tablespoon oregano
1 tablespoon powdered sage
1 teaspoon powdered ginger
1 teaspoon marjoram
1 œ teaspoon thyme
3 tablespoons packed brown sugar
3 tablespoons dry minced parsley
1 teaspoon pepper
1 tablespoon paprika
2 tablespoons garlic salt
2 tablespoons onion salt
2 tablespoons powdered chicken bouillon; or 4 cubes mashed
1 package Lipton tomato cup of soup mix

There are actually 11 spices in the above combination, but an additional 3
ingredients were necessary to derive that special flavor. Place all
ingredients in blender with on/off speed for 3 to 4 minutes to pulverize, or
rub through a fine strainer. Store in an airtight container so it will not
lose potency.

To use with flour, add 1 ounce of the mix to 1 cup of flour for coating
chicken."

Thanks but that's not really it.

Bah that's bogus!

Where's the flavour enhancer?
Where's the preservative?

Though I'd LOVE it if it were real. LOVE LOVE LOVE the KFC coating
far more than I should. (About once every 2-3 months)

If it's the ones I'm thinking of, you can still get those (at
Woolworths - what Safeway is called in NSW).

The coating's like a red, mild cajunny rub with oregano, right?

That could be it. I have been giving it more thought and I think there is a
bit of a tandoori feel to it as well. Definitely an orangy look to it.

I think we're thinking of the same thing. I don't think it's anything
like tandoori, but given the bright red colour I can understand why
you would think that. (That's *definitely* due to paprika - you can
smell it.)

It's not really Italian, not really Cajun, not really
anything.....except rather tasty.

Have you tried looking in Safeway in another area to see if they have
it, if you've tried your own already? It's still out there...

I am sure msg was in there somewhere. lol
No, this was chicken pieces - about 1.5kg - and the spice coating/rub was
already on the chicken.

Throw it all in a plaky bag , add mixed herbs + juice from a lemon and
cook , dont leave bagged for long as it tends to start the cooking due
to the lemon .

If they are the ones I thinkg they are, they are definitely NOT
tandoori. They're more a spicy style Italiany thing.
