hi folks

i want to get a friend a foodie type gift, about $30 ish, something that is
really good quality and she will use often.

i was once given a really good peeler of all things, so it always reminds me
of theperson that gave it to me, and i want this item to always remind the
user of a particular acheivement of hers....

she is a foodie

any thoughts?

The best things I bought for me and would give as gifts:
Zyliss lettuce spinner/dryer
Really good kitchen shears/scissors
Good quality kitchen knife
Wire collander that is large, rectangular, has expandable ends - that means
it can fit in any size sink.
A truly beautiful salad bowl

I have found that new(ish) Jamie Oliver shake & crush gadget to be very
good.

A nice mortar & pestle looks good too. (Maybe fill it with little
packets of special spices.)

A set of stainless steel mixing bowls looks good and are used often.

A set of good quality rubber spatulas & a pair of whisks?

A good quality corkscrew?

Could you give her the same type of peeler that you were given, or was
she the one who gave one to you?

What about one of those Microplane graters?

The "full size" is around the $40 mark, but the skinny zesters are
$15ish

I have a zester and absolutely LOVE it. I mainly use it for mincing
garlic and ginger though.

I was going to suggest a microplane grater too, but I admit I don't know the
prices. There are several shapes and sizes though, so you might find one at
the right price. I want one too!!!

"mªdcªt" was keen on a "microplane grater"...................

I must say I have never heard of a microplane grater. Is it like a mandolin
or like a ginger grater? I have a ginger grater, which is a little
rectangular, ceramic plate with raised edges and pimples in the centre to
grate the ginger - anything like that?

Richo.

They're basically just graters, but they're very sharp. Microplane
originally made woodworking tools, and the story (I heard) is that someone
needed to grate something (cheese?) and didn't have a kitchen grater handy
so used the woodworking one. It was so much better that they got Microplane
to branch out into kitchen tools. Or something like that.

A Chinese chopper is very handy about the kitchen and you should be able to
get a swept up one in your price range.
