Do *NOT* got to 'Get Fished' in Windsor.

www.getfished.com.au

Went there for lunch today, and it sucked. *BIG TIME*!!!!!!!

Had seen it on several visits beforehand (going to ZoneFresh 2 doors up)
and decided to give it a whirl.

$10.80 for battered Flake and a small chips and an 'Aoli'.

The 'aoli' was a lemon flavoured mayo, the chips....... some were crisp,
most were soggy.

The flake...... was the size of a pack of cards, and had the life deep
fried out of it. Overcooked. You'd think a speciality fish place would
know how to cook a frikken piece of fish!!!!

The service is almost non-existent (I had to clear and clean my own
table!!), the waiting time is obscene (I waited 15mins, and they were
not in any way shape or form, *busy*!!) But the highlight was watching
*two* car accidents occur about 10' away, while I waited. It kept me
awake!!


I still say that the best fish place in Brisbane is the Fish Kitchen in
Coorparoo.

Don't go to the marina at Wynnum (where the trawlers pull up). Bad service,
very expensive, the order takes *forever* and they aren't very good a
cooking fish (and G*d help you if you want a piece of *grilled* mackerel ...
"no we only deep-fry mackerel ... we only grill xxx" WTF???

Thats not the one right on the creek, over the road from the pub, is it?
It sits in the park. Where they feed the pelicans at about 1pm every
day.
Last time I was there was quite a while ago, but I seem to remember they
were pretty good.

Haven't been there for about 5 years ... maybe they're better now. I
remember waiting an hour for 2 mackerel and chips last time. ...and the
woman was really rude. Dad used to buy all his seafood there (well there
and at Colmslie), but he hasn't been there in ages either.
Another local Wynnum seafood place which isn't any good anymore is Wilson's
Boathouse. It used to be a fantastic restaurant (with a focus on good
seafood at a good price), but since its been refurbished and has new owners
(and a new menu) its not the same.

I wish the bloke that used to sell prawns off the back of his trawler at
Queensport Rd was back - nicest, freshest prawns around.

from there.
He seems to be well supplied with fish all the time though - either he's
gone fishing, or one of his old fishing cronies brings him a feed of
whatever they caught. Never huge amounts as they're all pretty good about
quotas ... although I do remember being dragged out in the boat every
weekend as a kid as that meant that Dad could have a couple of extra crab
pots if my brother and I were there.

LOL!! One reason I used to drag my two young sons along when I went
fishing/crabbing :-)
Although the laws state now that the person in 'charge' of the extras

Thirty something years ago *the* best fish shop in BNE was at Taringa;
on the left of the main drag heading out of town. I'm a bit hazy now
as to whether it was on the "one way" section, or whether the roads
had already rejoined by then. (That road's probably different now. :)

They sold absolutely delicious fresh prawns that had been cooked on
the trawlers out in the Bay the same day. (Don't know if the regs
still allow that -- ISTR that the food handling laws have banned it.)

On Friday evening I reckon half the bloody city must have been milling
around waiting for their bundle to take home. The "organisation" had
to be seen to be believed. Someone behind the counter would yell out
"Two fried plus chips" then about six people would claim the prize!

A bearded mate of mine was challenged that way one Friday by a bloke
who said he had been waiting for over 30 minutes; my mate replied that
he didn't have a beard when he came in...

Thirty something years ago *the* best fish shop in BNE was at Taringa;

Sqidley's Seafood and Chicken shop in the Victoria Point shopping
complex.

She who likes Flake was very pleased with the freshness and portion
size. I asked for 1 flake and 1 snapper and we ended up with 4 goodly
sized pieces of fish and a rather large serving of chips. Very
reasonably priced, too. And *fresh*.

It's a place that we'll visit again when we're out that way.

And we don't have to maraud and enslave our neighbours in order to gather
great foods and cooking styles, we actually encouage them to emigrate and

cuisine has to offer.

So, when were you in Australia? 1920s? 1930s? Obviously hasn't been in the
recent past - or maybe you just visited slum areas? (Yes, we do have the odd

Our food service industry is second to none - and certainly hasn't
contributed greatly to world obesity trends.

your so-called cuisine! From what I've experienced in America, you are
in no position to talk. Huge servings of bloody nearly inedible junk
food swimming in grease and overloaded with chili to make up for the
lack of flavour. I did get some good home cooked meals; if you didn't
here then it is a reflection on the people you were keeping company
with, not on the local cuisine. Unless, of course, you are so used to
bad cooking that you actually don't appreciate good cooking when it
lands on your plate. We've got a friend like that, and I regret to say
she's American, though to be fair she could be any nationality. I blame
the parents.

Australia, like America, was settled by people from all over the world.
They didn't need to be taught how to cook, they brought the knowledege
with them and, unlike far too many of your compatriots, equally far from
"real civilization" (now I suppose I've offended the Canadians), they
haven't forgotten and had to take lessons from the Mexicans. Indeed, I
have read that authentic Mexican food is not bad, but that a specially
inedible version has been developed by Americans. I'm sure somebody will
correct me if I'm wrong about this :-)

No breakfast, no brunch.

1430hrs on the balcony with nibblies...... and wine as *she* requested.

Found out my pooch *loves* marinated octopus........ but she didn't get
any of the leftover King Island Blue Brie.

Dinner was a Weber cooked chicken and veges to my own recipe.


Which I will divulge later....... couldn't be arsed now.

After this glass of wine, it's time for bed, methinks!!

aus.food is a dedicated food newsgroup, as is rfc. Before we had
aus.food, we only had rfc but most steered clear of it because of it's
U.S. only content.

Having posters from rfc posting into aus.food is going to up our message
count and hopefully get us listed with Google a lot quicker.

Oh, I doubt anyone will take him seriously. Many of us loud ignorant
Yanks have visited and enjoyed Australia. We spent three months in New
Zealand and Australia and found excellent restaurants in the big
cities, high quality ingredients at the markets, outstanding home
cooking from our (new and old) friends, and even interesting meals at
RSL's in the smaller towns. I will say that when Americans talk about
Oz, though, the friendliness of the people is a more likely topic of
conversation than the food. -aem

I've also had meals at RSLs that I would describe as "interesting", but
more in the sense of veal parmigiana garnished wth kiwi fruit. ;-)
Hmmmm, interesting!!

If you didn't know, kiwi fruit is also a good tenderiser. Slice it and
layer it on your (raw) steak, cover and leave for about 20-30mins. Scrape
off the fruit and cook.

Paw-paw is another good one for tough meat too.
For
what it's worth, while we're having tihs love-in, I think that
Australians and Americans get along pretty well -
Same here. So much so, I married one!! For a little while anyway :-)
I enjoyed my long ago
visit tremendously. There is a subtle difference in what you might call
the world view of each nation - Americans are devoted to the ideal of
heroic individualism, Australians more to a group ethic known as
"mateship" - but there's no harm in that.
I just wish that if Steve wants to have a go at Peter he would stick to
personal abuse and not make halfwitted attempts at insulting the whole
country, which obliges people like me to defend the national honour!
I think most people will see his rants for what they are. An immature
little dummy-spit.

Maybe he doesn't know what this means :-) ???

pasture. The kangaroo steaks were from the market. There's a fine line
(30 seconds?) between a delicious kangaroo steak and leather. My boss's
Mom in Adelaide prepared them to perfection.

We were there on a bird collection back in 2001. We stayed at Jack

did pretty good and really enjoyed it, being amazed at the distance and
different flight patterns of the dozen boomerangs I brought.

Jack took us to the bat cave for the evening takeoff. I forget how many
though. Was it in the millions? It was AWESOME.

Had my first can of Bunderberg Rum'n'coke as we left a gas station in
Naracoorte. Good stuff! My teammate who was driving said I could drink it
in the car. He said passengers are allowed to drink. That was so cool. I
remember thinking "wow the Aussies sure are civilized!"

2 minutes up the road is 'Clayfield Markets' (cnr Junction/Sandgate Rds).
They do a good grilled fish of your choice(simply with parsley and a very
light coating of flour and lemon), and the crumbed is nice too. Not a big
fan of battered, but it compares well to others if that's your thing. The
fruit market/deli has some nice stuff, and there's the 'Red Deli' across the
road too.
