choose one near an Aldi store.
but not cheaper .
And Aldi's prices have increased at least 20% overall in past 12
months... hmmm perhaps that's still a less of an increase than the
"main" few. :-/
What sort of things have increased by that much?
Aldi's coffee (500gm Africa, Columbia, Brasil) was $6.x up to 3 mths
ago now $7.x, springs to mind (I would need to go over old receipts
but I am noticing price increases each time I shop at Aldi) Perhaps
its because Aldi was noticbly cheaper to buy food from early on, that
now the increases become obvious? Toilet paper!!!!! Aldi has reduced
the number of potential bum wipes per role just to keep the price
down over the past year (rolls now weigh less and have less sheets
than they did a year ago) :-P :-(
Ummm off the top of my head, Aldi had (up until last mth) a really
nice imported virgin olive oil in 750 ml bottles. It seems to have
ditched these for some really nice locally produced virgin olive oil
in 500 ml bottles at a slightly increased price over the cheaper
imported stuff...
Getting away from Aldi (just noticed your subject change) Don't know
if you've ever followed the prices of bananas since the big banana
storm disaster, but I got to see price hikes of up to $15 per Kg or
more.
Depending on where you shop, prices of bananas can still be over $3 a
Kg... All through that period (of banana growers' recovery price
adjustmentation to bring our prices back down (cough)) NZers across
the ditch enjoyed tasty Equadorian bananas (as they have done since
the 1950's, all the way from Sth America) at $1 min to $2 max per Kg
as per usual, even though they cannot and have never been able to
grow the damn things commercially. Why does this happen?
I don't see much difference in fruit and vegs over the past
several years. Sure, you can see green beans at $8/kg like here
at Coles this week; but last week they were $2.48/kg IIRC.
Similar fluctuations occur with tomatoes, spuds, onions, celery,
mushrooms, ..., ... as well as with most of the common fruits
(currently apples, oranges, mandarins). With the exceptions of
snow peas and mushrooms, I rarely buy any fruit or veg at more
than $4/kg. There are always alternatives. (And you can always
go to IGA here for spuds and onions and things there on special.
:)
Most meat is certainly getting bloody dear, but I'm not sure you
can say the stores are the culprits there as the drought has had
an impact on supply and fodder prices have increased the price of
feedlot prime beef, for example. And, once again, I don't buy
much meat from our local Coles anyway.
When it comes to the stuff in jars, tins, and boxes, Coles is
still significantly cheaper than IGA most of the year for most
lines. But I don't really keep track of those prices as there are
far too many options to remember the details! The one I did
notice was those packets of chips that Coles reduced from 250/220
g to 200 g a couple of months a go, but kept the price much the
same, which amounted to an increase of around 17% on average.
(IGA sell the same lines in packets of 175 g, which I *suspect* is
also a recent reduction from their previous packaging which was
always less than Coles anyway, but I'm not sure of the actual
values before -- maybe they were 200 g?)
Cheers, Phred.
Stuffed if I know, Phred. 10 years ago, I used to struggle to get $80
worth of shopping into the boot :-) Nowdays, $80 worth is an easy
stroll across the park with only a couple of non-PC plastic bags
weighing me down (give or take a bag, allowing for package item size
differences).
