couldn't believe it! FFS, *why* is something like this needed in the
kitchen? Okay, maybe not "needed", but somebody out there must be
buying the damn things!

Apart from the fact that I think it's overkill for the job, there's
the fact that avocados quite often have a few "nasty bits" on the
skin side of the flesh which you don't see until you've got the
flesh out. I would prefer to see the defects *before* I slice the
thing up, so just scooping out each half with a spoon seems a better
way to go anyway.

Slicing first makes it harder, if anything. The nasty bits are always
just under the surface of the skin, so assuming you scoop the flesh out
in one clean go, you can then just pick out the lumps quickly doing it
this way.

Personally, if I need sliced avocado I slice it in half, remove
the pit, and then with each half remove the skin and slice
up what's left.

The "remove the skin" step depends on the ripeness of the avocado.
If it's really ripe I use a spoon, if it's only just ripe I
either peel it off by hand or separate it with a butterknife.

I must say I've never in my life completely sliced one up through
the skin.

I'm so with you on this item Phred. What is so hard about slicing an
avocado? That gadget looks like an impulse item to me. I'd see it in a bin
at a dollar store and buy it. It'd sit in gadget area with all the other

I've not heard any lecturing about Scandinavian Good Things.

IKEA (the store) is kind of fun, but it is full of other things (I think)
besides Scandanavian items.

I have to admit I have always thought highly of ScanPans (though I've never
bought any, I've been tempted).
I like Dansk and admit that I own a beautiful (to me) Scandanavian made
(probably in the last 3-4 decades) teapot.

Most of the stuff I buy is from China -- not much choice. I'm sold on
'stuff' made in Italy. I wonder if I've been sold a bill-of-goods.

Perhaps in Australia they are importing more Scandinavian products? Is that
so?

M and I eat avocado every day. But there's no way we'd bother with a
tool like that. A few quick knife slices, and the flesh is all out
there, neatly sliced on the plate.

LOL! I Have seen this device in a catalog and wondered the same thing.
Another super-specialized tool for those with more money than brains,
and without the intelligence or ability to use a paring knife to do the
same thing. Not to mention, the idea that all avocados are the same size
or do not have over-ripe sections that need to be cut out - duh!

Once in a while, I come across things that make me say "That's a
good idea!" but they don't always work that well, witness Oxo's
mango slicer! I'm back to a *blunt* knife again.

Why?

Maybe for similar reasons you can buy pre-chopped onions and the like in
supermarkets.
I always thought avos were quick and easy to prepare...

I always thought avos were quick and easy to prepare...

There's a vast difference between a useful gadget, and pre-prepared stuff in
bags (like those awful salads in bags and chopped up veggies).

This (or a similar) device has been around for decades. I've never bothered
to buy one.

Don't be so sensitive.

Aside from that, unless you have some kind of physical disability, I
just cant see how one of those would be either quicker or easier to use
than a knife and/or spoon. I've been eating the things almost daily for
more years than I know (also managed an avocado farm for 5 years) and
never seen any real improvement on the simplest method.

Problem with that second method, why slice it at all if you are making a
mashed recipe with it? I'd just scoop the fruit out of the shell with a
spoon, drop it in the bowl and mash it with a fork.

And when I want slices, I want them wedge-shaped for things like this:

So what I do is slice it in half around the seed, pop out the seed and
slice each half so I have quarters. I then simply peel the peel off with
my fingers so I have a perfect 1/4 naked avocado I then cut in half
again to make 1/8th wedges like are pictured in the salad I made.

I've learned to pick the perfectly ripe avocado to make the wedges with.
It has to be just the right ripeness to be able to remove the peel
pretty much in one piece without breaking or messing up the avocado
quarter.

Takes me maybe 60 seconds tops to do this.

I do have a video mode for my digicam. I need to get together with my
sister to film a demo of it.

P.S. I stumbled on *another* type of avocado slicer in a local
"kitchenware" shop today -- this one has wires to do the cutting
rather than solid blades. Seems every company of consequence makes a
version of these damn things! You can even get one to take the seed
out too!
