Yup, I remember buying some as far back as 1993.

The (cryovac) steak I had was incredibly tender, but very VERY bland.
But no harm in trying it for curiosities sake.

Yeah it is funny isn't it. You wouldn't think we would really need to
import beef into this country, seeing as we already have a thriving beef
industry and export some of the best quality beef ourselves (mainly to
asia).
But I guess with the current good value of the aussie dollar, it has somehow
worked out cheaper to import from the US. I think virgina is the 2nd?
biggest exporter of beef in the world.

If i see non australian beef personally I would be very hesitant to buy it.
I'm concerned with animal welfare and I know that the laws surrounding the
treatment of cattle in the US aren't as stringent as they are here.

And have you heard about the way they are (not) dealing with Mad Cow Disease?
I wouldn't touch Yank beef with a barge pole.

I thought that it was not possible to get non-Australian beef into
Australia (I assume that is where you are talking about?). Although
perhaps with the exception of NZ beef.

I also believe that pork coming in from the USA is quite commonplace in Aus.

They are battery farmed, a bit like chooks. Fed grain and hormones to make
them grow and puff faster, in sheds with concrete floors, all crammed
together.

A strange thing to say...Concerned about animal welfare yet you'll happily
tuck into a slice of dead animal...Sorry I don't mean to be picky but it
struck me as a bizarre comment..

It's not a strange bizarre comment at all.

Many meat eaters are concerned that animals that will be slaughtered
do not go through unnecessary pain or suffering, such as they do in
countries like Egypt, China and so on.

In the US, they raise cattle in places akin to Hen Batteries. Similar to
piggeries. the animals can't move around, they are on concrete, and their
job is to eat (food and hormones) and grow big quickly so they can be
killed.
