Hi All,

In a thread on another group, they were talking about nopales. I had to
google it lol. Its the cactus pad of the prickly pear and to my wonder it
is available at some latin grocers here in Aus. Here in Tassie I've never
seen it.

Just curious, does any one here have a grocer in their area that supplies it
and has any one ever cooked with it?

No, but I know you can. And I have been told that the fruits from the
Prickly Pear are delicious. I have a recipe for Prickly Pear Ice Cream but
have never seen the fruits outside an Italo/Australian's garden.

Prickly pear is a NOXIOUS WEED. It devastated large areas of eastern
Australia in the first half of the last century.
It ruined many farmers and drove them off their land.
You should advise your local council if some "Italo/Australian's garden" is
growing it.

Absolutely not and the reason is, that unlike you, I know that just because
a plant is a weed in one area, it does not mean that it is a weed in all
areas. Prickly Pear has never been a problem and will never be a problem in
my area because it has to be looked after to survive so I see no need
whatsoever to do anything about it.

As for cooking with it, I think it's mainly a sweets type dish, or as a
fruit.

We'll be back down in Tassie in August (again). Hopefully we'll get to
see some snow on Mt Wellington like we did last time :-)

In summer you see the fruits in greengrocers' (with metal tongs, lol!), but I
have never seen the pads for sale.
