Room Service only ( the 'usbund got to eat in more elegant surrounds in the
ballroom, and said the food there was most excellent too.. but I can't
comment on that .... )

Firstly, can I just say that we are not RACV Club Members ( different to
Average Joe RACV Membership ), and getting into this place was like getting
in to see the Queen if you are not a member with your very own swipe card,
etc...

ANYWAY..

After my last visit to town ( http://www.grandhotelsofitel.com.au/ ), where
I learned that $36.00 80's micro-meals are still in vogue ( plus our veges
went missing, as did the - I assume - complimentary bread, as we were given
complimentary butter ... but I digress ) .. I decided to bring some 'home
comforts' to keep the prices at bay, and brought my own pate and biscuits
and a bottle of champers to keep me company while I watched Lley-Lley on the
wide-screen plasma :)

So imagine my surprise to discover there was not one meal over $17.00 !! -
and that was the Porterhouse !!
I could have ordered one of everything on the menu and not put myself in the
poorhouse - sides were only $3 a piece !!

As I said, hubby was dining in a suit on another level, so I was just
ordering for me & the bub.
He's been a little light on appetite lately, so I thought i'd order only for
me, with extra sides.
We got an Angus burger ( faaaaaaaaaaaaabulous, and the little creep ate far
too much of it ! ), which was served with a simple side of dressed rocket,
on a half-bun with homemade mayo, and some cheese melted on top and cherry
tomatoes. I don't normally order burgers, but this meat was so divine, it
could have been a steak - very impressed, and large too, though not overly
so.

We also got a side of : hot chippies ( ooh yeah ;), seasonal greens, and
another of asparagus spears, which I swear was like 500g of the stuff !!
Dressed in a simple butter, lemon, pepper seasoning, Master B and I scoffed
the lot in no time - best asparagus ever !

Anyway, I dunno if it's a refelction on mummy's cooking, but my son ate a
fair bit of all this, which is good, but also bad ( mummy didn't want to
share tooo much ;) ... and all this after pate and bikkies too ( no champers
for the babe ;)

Food: 9.5/10 ( the chips weren't the best .. too
low-brow ? )
Ambiance N/A really .... although the rooms and view of the city
are very nice here
Staff/Service N/A again. Some girl brought a tray into my room and
was very nice about it.
Price: 10/10 - A1 food for bistro prices !*

* BTW: We husband spoke to a guy who is a member, and if you're into this
kind of thing, and can afford it, it might be worthwhile considering..... he
says a main meal in the bistro for dinner ( he goes once a week ) is never
over $15 for a main ... and when he travels abroad, reciprocal rights get
him cheap accom in most major cities, and they are always in the centre of
town ( ie: he recently went o the London Club, and it was in Pall Mall ). I
think membership might be $600 a year, but i'm not sure what the criteria
is...

Still, like most things, you've got to commit to using it to get your $'s
worth, I guess.

Still, a fab meal in regards to room service, at fantastic prices.

Oh, and Josh ? .. if you're reading ..... no Rocky Road icecream was
required, HTH.

Sounds a bit like the Commonwealth Club. Members have reciprocal rights at
the Carlton Club in London, Princeton Club in NY, the Savage Club in
Melbourne, etc etc. But no Paskes (or Hueys) are allowed in.

Did you smuggle him in? :)

Some of these sorts of clubs are majorly wanky.

"Except on occasions where smart casual dress is permitted, Gentlemen are
required to wear a jacket and tie, Ladies are to wear tailored trousers,
skirts or dresses."

"Bridge is regularly played at the club."

They are good value for good quality, central, accommodation though.

But this is the first time I've heard of an automobile club operating one.

I see. What a shame you'll get even less of your meal in nine months when
you have to share it with someone else...
